Peoples Supreme Congress (PSC) Rejects “Hate Speech Bill, vows to mobilize Nigerians to occupy the National Assembly
Great Nigerians, it has come to our notice that the senators are reviving the controversial Bill on Hate Speech. Lai Mohammed, Information Minister first gave hints of it in 2017. Formal legislative steps were, however, taken in March last year, 2018, to put life into the bill and enact it into law.
On finding that it was hot as red charcoal, smart guy Senate President Bukola Saraki quickly threw it out of the window. There was uproar across the land and Saraki knew the Senate could not successfully swim against the tide of public sentiments and opinion. Saraki had sufficient political education to know that Nigerians would not surrender their freedoms nor allow any abridgement of same.
The current set of senators seems determined to ram the obnoxious law down our throats. Captioned “National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speeches,” the bill reads: “A person who uses, publishes, presents, produces, plays, distributes and/or directs the performance of any material, written and/or visual which is threatening, abusive or insulting or involves the use of threatening , abusive or insulting words or behaviour commits an offence if such a person intends thereby to stir up ethnic hatred, or having regard to all the circumstances, ethnic hatred is likely to be stirred up against any person or person from such an ethnic group in Nigeria.”
Here are the consequences of what can be regarded as hate speech: “Any person who commits an offence under this section shall be liable to life imprisonment and where the act causes any loss of life, the person shall be punished with death by hanging.”
The aspect of the bill that carries lighter punishment states as follows: “A person who subjects another to harassment on the basis of ethnicity commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to an imprisonment for a term not less than five years or to a fine of not less than N10 million, or both.”
The bill is sponsored by the Deputy Senate Whip, Sabi Abdullahi (a former Senate spokesperson) and it has passed first reading on the floor of the red chamber on Tuesday 12th /11/19. Government of intimidation. They want to cower everyone into silence. We in Peoples’ Supreme Congress (PSC) do here by via this Press release firmly reject the oppressive repressive “Hate Speech Bill” with its murderous intents in all Its ramifications.
Out of many disturbing issue affecting the country populace negatively, some self centred politicians put in power by citizens gathered together devoid of providing good living conditions for people but were talking about “Hate Speech Bill” in order to silent us. The government wants to desperately control the social media and turn it into another NTA where they’ll tell you what they want you to hear and believe. Politicians plunging and stealing our commonwealth should be the ones to be hanged. Not innocent citizens expressing themselves.
We can confidently list things that require ‘Death By Hanging’ and not the so called undefined “Hate Speech”. Just to mention few of those things that the National Assembly should pass Death Penalty Bill on:
- Vote buying
- Judgment buying
- Election rigging/rigger
- Apprehended terrorists
- Sponsors of terror gangs
- Partisan security agents
- Government officials lying under oath
- Exploiting the common wealth of the citizens through outrageous allowances for the legislatures.
We wish to clearly remind our Senators that we elected them to protect and defend us and not to send us to death Penalty by hanging. So Nigeria’s Senators collect N13.5 million monthly per Senator just to propose a ‘BILL’ on ‘hate speech’ and PUNISH Nigerians with ‘death by hanging’?
Nigerians deserves better than this and we in Peoples Supreme Congress (PSC) are fully loaded with local and international media contacts to fight and expose those congregation of looters, political idiots, legislative miscreants and executive bandits trying to cage our freedom. The “Hate Speech Bill” is dead on arrival! And we shall mobilize Nigerians to occupy the National Assembly, if the Senators dare force that evil “Hate Speech Bill” on Nigerians.
(2)We wish to also use this Press Conference to call on the Federal Government under the leadership of His Excellency, President, Mohammed Buhari, (GCFR) to ensure free and fair elections in upcoming governorship election in Kogi and Bayelsa state respectively in both states of the Federation.
(3) And in conclusion, we call upon the Federal Government led by His Excellency, President, Mohammed Buhari, (GCFR) to immediately and unconditionally release all currently detained Political prisoners granted bail by competent court of law as refusal to obey court orders amounts to executive rascality inspired by impunity and absolute disregard for rule of law and constitutionalism.
We thank you all.
Signed: Leadership of the Congress.
Comrade Ikem Anthony Kalzeeni, leader PSC
