ICC begins probe into Nigeria’s #EndSARS killings

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has begun an investigation into the alleged killings by Nigerian security operatives during the #EndSARS protests.

ICC made the confirmation in a statement issued by the Office of the ICC Prosecutor.

The office said that it received several petitions on crimes allegedly perpetrated by Nigeria’s security operatives.

According to the statement, ICC confirmed that it is conducting a preliminary examination into the recent #EndSARS protests in Nigeria and the attending human rights violations.

The statement said that the examination will assess whether the legal criteria for opening an investigation under the Rome Statute are met.

The International Court assured that it will make its findings of the preliminary examination public.

Recall that thousands of Nigerians took to the streets in several towns and states to demonstrate against police brutality and illegalities.

The protests prompted a crackdown that saw some scores of civilians, 11 police officers and seven soldiers killed, according to President Muhammadu Buhari.
