Igbo Group Queries $200m Spent on repair of Enugu Airport
President, Igbo Ekunie Initiative, Maazị Tochukwu Ezeoke has raised concern over the $200 million spent on renovating the Akanu Ibiam International airport in Enugu state.
Senator Sirika Hadi, the Minister for Aviation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria says $200 million has been spent so far on the airport runway and a few other repairs, sources say however the amount so far expended surpasses $320million.
Ezeoke while featuring on an Elombah Television interview wondered how Nigeria could have spent $200 million on airport repair whereas the Ohio Airport was constructed with $358 million. [watch video below]
Account to him, I don’t know the cost of constructing a runway, but Ohio Airport was built with $358 million and the Minister is telling us that we have spent $200 million for the repair of Enugu Airport.
The amount of money spent building a runway at Enugu Airport is enough to build a Brand New Airport!
He added that the former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah spent $500 million on remodeling our four international airports namely, Lagos, Abuja, Porthacourt and Kano and yet $200 million was spent on Enugu Airport only.
“When Stella Oduah was Minister of Aviation and we took $500 million to rehabilitate four international Airports, they were Abuja, Kano, Port-hacourt and Lagos for $500 million that was what we were told, but now we are being told that we have spent close to $200 million.
“I am not insinuating anything, but you be the judge, does that make sense?
“Moreover when you look at the entire scenario surrounding the Enugu International airport, it raises cause for concern”, Ezeoke stated.
He accused the Federal government of not being transparent about the work schedule of the Enugu Airport.
Maazi Ezeoke said, “When it comes to Enugu Airport, at some point when Enugu Airport was closed down, we made calls for the work breakdown or for the work schedule to be made public ,
“If they had been transparent, made the work schedule at the Airport public, we will not be where we are today.
“Every single person will know that this is what was paid for, and this is what we were expecting.”
