The Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Acho Ihim, on Wednesday, made away with the mace after twenty-one out of the 27 lawmakers attempted to impeach him.
Hon. Ihim, however, was suspended after he absconded with the mace.
Trouble began when the Speaker adjourned the ongoing plenary after reading a letter announcing the lifting of the suspension of the 27 Local Government chairmen.
ElombahNews reported last week that the state lawmakers suspended the Local Government chairmen after failing to appear before them and answer questions bordering on corruption.
Ihim drew the angst of fellow lawmakers after he announced the suspension without duly consulting with his colleagues.
The lawmakers cited Order 15 of the House Rule, which empowers lawmakers to contribute to issues before the Speaker rules.
The Speaker, however, said that no lawmaker was allowed to contribute to the matter and ruled unilaterally.
The 21 lawmakers, after announcing his suspension, immediately elected Hon. Chiendu Offor of the Action Alliance as the interim Speaker.
They also suspended the Majority Leader of the House, Lugard Osuji and elected Lloyd Chukwuemeka in his place.
While addressing journalists after the scenario, the Acting Speaker said that the 21 lawmakers have served impeachment notices on Ihim and Osuji.
