African champions Cameroon have crashed out of 2018 World Cup which will be held in Russia and at the same time putting a mild scar on Nigeria’s chances as the first African nation to qualify for the mundial.

The nail on Cameroon’s ambition was hit it when Nigeria mauled it 4-0 in Uyo on Friday and followed it up with a 1-1 draw in Yaoundé on Monday leaving Nigeria with a 5-1 aggregate.

Cameroon dominated at the opening phase but failed to clear a ball after a great run into the area by Odion Ighalo, who made it to the byline.

But the Indomitable Lions, as they are called, would not give up without leaving a dent on Nigeria’s ambition as well.

Nigeria took the lead after 30 minutes through Moses Simon but Vincent Aboubakar’s 75th minute penalty kick cancelled out the 30th minute goal for Nigeria to draw with hosts.

The 1-1 draw at home ensured that Nigeria will have to convince Zambia and Algeria that it is the best for the group as their chances were postponed.

If Nigeria pulls it off, then they will join other four group winners from the final round of African qualifying to progress to the World Cup in Russia

With just three points from four matches, Cameroon the curtain has been drawn on Cameroon’s chances, and they can no longer finish top of Group B.

After a 0-4 humiliation in Uyo on Match Day 3, the Indomitable Lions needed to halt the Super Eagles’ stride which has placed them top of the group.

The hosts started brightly, holding down their visitors who however went on to warm themselves into the game and went upfront by the half hour through Simon.

While the Eagles continued to threaten to increase their lead through sporadic attacks from the flanks, it was however the Lions who took advantage of their seeming contentment.

The Eagles now have 10 points from four matches, having won their first 3 matches, and thus stay atop the group’s table.

Cameroon on the other hand stay in third place with 3 points from 4 matches, having drawn 3 games and lost one.

The other fourth round match in the group will see Algeria host Zambia in Constantine and a win for Zambia will take them to 7 points, 3 behind Nigeria with 2 games to play.

Meanwhile, Algeria must win Zambia if they must keep alive any slim hopes they still have of going to the mundial.

Nigeria will have sealed their position atop the group on Tuesday if Algeria beat Zambia, since no other team can upstage it with two Match Days remaining.

Cameroon will host Algeria next in October in a no-stake match while Nigeria will take on visiting Zambia.
