…Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Champions League record
…as Bundesliga side drop into Europa League
Cristiano Ronaldo started his Ballon d’Or celebrations early with a goal in Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund to become the first player in history to score in each of his team’s six Champions League group games.
The 32-year-old midfielder is tipped to collect the Golden Ball for a fifth time in Paris on Thursday.
On Wednesday night, Ronaldo made it nine goals so far in the competition. Some may want to consign him to history, but in this competition at least, he just keeps making it.
Ronaldo made the first for Real Madrid when he cut in from the left and played in Isco. The midfielder edged the ball on to Borja Mayoral and he marked his first Champions League start of the season with a goal.
Ronaldo got the second again running in from the left. For all the talk of finishing his career as a centre-forward, he still prefers to come off the left on to his right foot and he dipped a curling shot beyond a stationary Roman Burki.
When Madrid’s winning goal finally came it was Lucas Vazquez who scored it. Marco Asensio and Theo Hernandez combined and Vazquez’ curling shot crept into the far corner. Madrid deserved the goal – they had taken the game to Dortmund who were content to defend and look for Aubameyang and Pulisic on the break.
Ronaldo can now jet off to Paris with a smile on his face, and Madrid go into next week’s draw the team that none of the Group winners will want to face.
