The Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections, Dr. Dakuku Peterside has described the bail granted Hon Ojukaye Flag-Amachree by the Court of Appeal on all counts as the “triumph of light over evil and end of wickedness from Rivers State Government House.”

He stressed that the judiciary has once again risen to its bastion as the last hope of the oppressed and those unjustly persecuted by power mongers.

Hon. Ojukaye Flag Amachree, an APC chieftain in Rivers State was arrested and sent to prison on concocted charges by the Rivers State Government and all reasonable attempts to get the state High Court grant him bail fell on deaf ears.

Along the line, one of the lawyers defending him in court, Barr. Ken Atsuwete, was murdered in controversial circumstances, just as the Rivers State Government filed fresh murder charges against Amachree, in an attempt to keep him perpetually in prison.

However, Dr. Dakuku Peterside says the evil plans of the Nyesom Wike-led administration in the state will never endure as “time and time again, it will fall like pack of cards as you cannot build something on nothing.”

“This is a great day for Rivers people. This is a pointer to the end of recklessness, arbitrariness, impunity and wickedness on the part of a governor who rose to power through violence.

“The Appeal Court has once again reaffirmed our belief in the judiciary. No matter how long a lie has travelled, it takes just one day for truth to catch up with it. Today, the truth has dawned on evil and wickedness.

“All along, we have always maintained the innocence of Ojukaye Flag Amachree. Even the police have come out to say they do not have evidence against him. So you wonder why the desperation of Wike and his cohorts? Why the desperation to incarcerate Ojukaye? He stated.

Peterside, who is also the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), berated Governor Nyesom Wike for alleging that INEC has handed over the original result sheets of December 10 re-run election in the state to Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon. Chibuike Amaechi.

According to him, “Wike is just being mischievous and desperate. At every election, he is the one accusing everybody of plans to rig election. Sometimes, he forgets that he is the governor of the state and his statements are embarrassing to the office he occupies.

“Wike should stop crying and face the election. I have always said it and I will still maintain my stand - the APC will win any free and fair election in Rivers State. We have responsible and decent candidates that can win election at anytime.

“Why is Wike always afraid of every election? If he is not threatening INEC officials, he is accusing security agencies of compromise. He is the same person that will set phantom Commission of Inquiry to arrive at a predetermined outcome. What manner of a governor is Wike? For how long will he continue to fool Rivers people?” Dr. Peterside queried.

A Civil Society Organisation, Media Initiative against Injustice, Violence and Corruption -MIIVOC has taken a swipe on the Department of State Services-DSS in Imo State over its arrest and continued detention of rights activist, Aku Obidinma.

MIIVOC Executive Director, Dr. Walter Duru, who made the call while addressing newsmen in Owerri, Thursday, warned that the DSS action is an abuse of the fundamental human rights of the citizen.

He further described the Secret Police’ action as politically motivated, urging the Service to desist from getting involved in politics, but concentrate on their constitutional duty of internal security.

“If DSS has any evidence of breach of State Security against Aku Obidinma, they should charge him to Court and not illegally detain him in perpetuity. It amounts to impunity. Information at our disposal suggests that the Coordinator of Imo Bilie Initiative, Aku Obidimma was arrested on Monday, 21st November, 2016 by men of the Department of State Services. He is said to have attended a Radio programme in Owerri on Monday, 21st November, 2016 and was dropped off by his colleagues and that was the last time anyone had contact with him. His phones have been switched off. We are reliably informed that he is in the custody of the DSS. He has been there without communication and nobody, including his family members has been allowed access to him. This is most unfortunate.”

Continuing, Duru warned against any attempt to muscle freedom of expression in the state, insisting that the people’s fundamental rights be respected.

It would be recalled that Aku Obidimma, a former aide of Imo State Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere has been a fiery critic of his former boss.

It is not clear if his arrest is connected to his critical stance against his former boss, but sources within the state government house reveal that the deputy governor, Eze Madumere may have a hand in his ordeal.

.....backs Amnesty international

A frontline Pro-democracy and Non-governmental Organization- HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has demanded the Army’s high command to fish out and punish their officers/operatives who shot and killed over 150 unarmed civilian protesters belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Rights group has also faulted the hasty and insensitive response from the Army headquarters dismissing the report compiled by the United Kingdom based organization- Amnesty International on the identities of the civilians killed when soldiers and police opened fire with live bullets into crowds of unarmed Igbo protesters in Ontisha, Anambra State and across the South East of Nigeria.

“We expect that the office of the Chief of Army Staff should have meticulously studied the massive evidence of coordinated extra-judicial executions which Amnesty International generated from credible eye witnesses and non-governmental institutions with a view to deploying effective and accountable internal mechanisms to identify and prosecute the military operatives and field officers of the Nigerian Army who gave the illegal orders that led to the slaughter of over 150 civilians needlessly”.

“We call on Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai to do the needful by initiating comprehensive cleanup of the military establishment to rid it off some of the bad eggs who have blood on their hands because it is a crime against humanity for armed soldiers to have opened fire into crowds of civilians”.

HURIWA in a statement jointly authorized by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf, said credible Civil Society observers have testified that the evidence generated on the killings of IPOB members by armed security forces are convincing and highly credible and therefore must not be dismissed by mere wave of hand.

“Let the Chief of Army Staff who has even set up a human rights remedial mechanism within the Army to respond much more robustly and transparently to the persuasive reports done by Amnesty International and deliver justice to the families whose bread-winners were wasted needlessly just for peacefully agitating for self-determination which is allowed under International Laws”.

HURIWA recalled that in the latest report yesterday, Amnesty International said an analysis of 87 videos, 122 photographs and 146 eyewitness testimonies relating to demonstrations and other gatherings between August 2015 and August 2016 consistently showed that the military fired live ammunition with little or no warning to disperse crowds.

It also found evidence of mass extrajudicial executions by security forces, including at least 60 people shot dead in the space of two days in connection with events to mark Biafra Remembrance Day.

“Since August 2015, there has been a series of protests, marches and gatherings by members and supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who have been seeking the creation of a Biafran state. Tensions increased further following the arrest of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu on October 14, 2015.”

HURIWA cautioned that Nigeria is gradually becoming a society whose government unwittingly tolerates unlawful killings of civilians by the same supposedly professional armed security forces who are heavily maintained with the resources of the same people they intermittently turned their weapons illegally to terminate their precious lives on nebulous ground of peacefully agitating for self-determination.
