Karshi DPO allegedly detains citizen illegally, demands N100k for release —CSO
A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), the Eagle Eyes Transparency Network has accused the Divisional Police Officer of Karshi Division, Amodu Yahaya of illegally detaining a citizen, one Mr. Kingsley Power Ubong and allegedly demanding one hundred thousand Naira before he could be released.
The Investigative Officer of Eagle Eyes Transparency Network, Dr. George Davidson brought this development to the attention of newsmen following his petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Abuja and environs, Bala Ciroma.
Dr. Davidson, in the said petition, wrote:
“My able AIG Ciroma this is to bring to your attention that the DPO of Karshi Division Amodu Yahaya is about to drag your hard earned reputation to the mud by not obeying the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“He takes criminal cases to courts that lacks jurisdiction and even when the same court asked him to release the defendant , Yahaya Amodu is still not willing to release the defendant.
“Sir call him to order please. Otherwise, we shall do a publication on his atrocities.”
He also alleged that Yahaya is demanding N100,000 for the release of Mr. Ubong but firmly added: “There won’t be any #100,000. We shall ensure justice.”
The petition was copied to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Police Service Commission (PSC), all Deputy Inspector Generals of Police (DIGs), all AIGs, all Commissioners of Police, and Associate Media Rooms.
He urged the relevant persons and personnel to call the Karshi DPO detaining the Nigerian citizen illegally at the Karshi Division in Abuja to order.
Earlier, in a terse message to DPO Yahaya, Davidson wrote:
“Mr Amodu Yahaya, the DPO Karshi Division Abuja, release Mr Kingsley Power Ubong from your cell.
“He has been there for more than a week and sick. You didn’t take him to a court of competent jurisdiction.
“You claimed to be a lawyer but breaking the law of the land. You know fully well that the Complainant has withdrawn his complaint, still you are demanding #100,000 before you release the defendant. Why?
“We shall drag you to the appropriate authorities and seek justice for the defendant.”
He added: “Mr Amodu Yahaya, who is the Prosecutor of the case? A lawyer? What is his name? This illegality must stop.
“You detained a Nigerian in a police station for more than a week without a Court order from a competent court jurisdiction? Where is Kingsley Power Ubong?”
The Police Force PRO, Frank Mbah, did not respond to efforts made by ElombahNews to reach him over the matter.
Also, the phone of DPO Karshi, Amodu Yahaya, could not be reached as it was switched off.
