Mali coup leader promises short transition to organise election

186

Colonel Assimi Goita, leader of the junta that toppled President Ibrahim Keita of Mali has promised a short transition period to organise elections and return constitutional order in the country.

Amid palpable euphoria, the opposition Coalition M5-RFP, which was behind public protests that qickened the military intervention appears to be finding common grounds with the junta.

But international rejection of the military action mounts, with calls for the unconditional release of detained Keita and other officials of his government.

The UN Security Council has met on the Mali crisis at the request of France, the former colonial in Mali.

And after the second extraordinary Summit in weeks on Mali, ECOWAS is dispatching a mission to Bamako, but has also suspended Mali and announced sanctions.
