My Response to IGP Adamu on Lopsided Promotions
By Clifford Chukwuemeka Iroanya
Mr. Mohammed Abubakar Adamu
Inspector General of Police
Force Hqtrs, Central Area, Abuja – Nigeria.
Response to Investigative Report by INTERSOCIETY on Gross Nepotism against Officers of Igbo Extraction from the Southeast Region in the recent Promotion Exercise in the Nigeria Police Force
I was privileged to be included in the communication from the International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law (INTERSOCIETY) to you and I feel morally obliged to respond to you based on my inclusion in the said communication.
INTERSOCIETY conducted a thorough investigation on the recent promotions in the Police Force and they discovered gross nepotism in favour of Northern Police Officers and the suppression/exclusion of Officers of Igbo Extraction from the Southeast Region.
The investigative report by INTERSOCIETY is so gory and shameful that it could be dismissed as a fairy tale. Yet it was a reality coming out of the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of which you are in charge.
According to the investigative report, you blatantly refused to promote qualified Officers of Igbo Extraction from the Southeast but rather concentrated all the promotions on Northern Officers of Muslim religion in a show of religious camaraderie.
Specifically, out of 14 newly-promoted Commissioners of Police (CP), you allocated 13 to Northern Muslims and one to a Southern Christian from a region other than Southeast, thereby leaving the Southeast region with none.
The report further revealed that there is no Officer of Igbo Extraction from the Southeast who is an Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police among the existing 36 AIG’s. Even among the current 12 Zonal AIG’s, there is none from the Southeast.
Furthermore, there is only one CP among the 37 State CP’s who is from the Southeast instead of a minimum 6 State CP’s from the Southeast Region. The list of the lopsided promotions goes on and on and even worse for other lower cadres of Officers.
But the question here is; If you were treated in like manner, could you have jumped from CP in 2015 to become Inspector General of Police (IGP) in 2019, just within four years?
Has it not occurred to you that you are violating the Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar-imposed 1999 Constitution which you vowed to uphold, defend and protect?
Are these Igbo Officers not the same who were required to score higher than their Northern counterparts before gaining admission into Police College and who end up graduating top of their class?
Do you really understand that your act is a criminal one and you deserve a place in prison for undermining the same unitary Constitution you swore to uphold?
It is not too late for you to retrace your steps by reversing these lopsided promotions or making it up by promoting Officers of Igbo Extraction from the Southeast Region as clearly detailed by INTERSOCEITY in that investigative report.
The countdown is on and you have to abide by the demands of INTERSOCIETY as stipulated in that report or live with the infamy for the rest of your life.
I guarantee you that even if you ignore the demand to make amends, you shall live to see restitution made, sooner than later, to correct your nepotistic promotions. The ball is in your court.
