A text of press conference on the position of National Association of Nigerian Students (nans) Zone b on the Supreme Court judgement on Akwa Ibom and Rivers State Governorship Elections
Gentlemen of the Press, greetings in the spirit of Aluta Movement
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B is the apex umbrella body of all Nigerian Students in South South and South East Nigeria, with the inalienable right of protecting the interest of Nigerian Students/Masses in the eleven States of the region and the country at large.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone “B”, has painstakingly observed the recent attacks and political aspersions on the Supreme Court chiefly on the basis of their judgment on the governorship election petition in Rivers and Akwa Ibom States which confirmed the election of Mr. Udom Emmanuel and Mr. Nyesom Wike as governors of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States respectively.
The Association is totally dissatisfied with such preposterous attacks which is lacking in basic political logic and legal back up.
The Association has learnt that the APC is only using the political brawl in the States to indirectly accentuate her inordinate and rapacious quest for the rich oil region of Akwa Ibom and Rivers State which has slept off her political sway.
This their National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun could not hide in a recent interview.
It is really unfortunate that the Chairman of Akwa Ibom State chapter of All Progressive People’s Congress (APC), Mr. Amadu Attai has stooped so low in showing the desperation of his party in taking over Akwa Ibom State by all means, fair or crude.
It is legally unacceptable and practically inconsequential to start casting aspersions on the Supreme Court for a judgement whose reasons have not been made public.
It would be astute and proper for both anti-Wike and Udom’s group to exercise patience while the Supreme Court unravels the reasons behind its verdict on the State gubernatorial election petitions.
The statement released by the chairman of Akwa Ibom State chapter of the APC, Amadu Attai in response to the Supreme Court verdict on the Akwa Ibom State election is unjust and at the same time a political propaganda that doesn’t hold water.
It is therefore an orchestrated attempt to derail the governor’s industrialization blueprint which has started to yield result.
Hence, it is a stratagem aimed at distracting the young Governor who is willing to work for the benefits of Akwa Ibom populace most especially the indigent ones.
Calling on Mr. President to probe the Supreme Court Verdict on Akwa Ibom and Rivers State elections is totally vile and practically uncalled for as it would only culminate to breach of Montesquieu’s theory of separation of power which the country has long adopted for years now.
The Judiciary is an independent body that shouldn’t be interfered in her activities including court verdicts.
May it be noted that any move by Mr. President to probe the Supreme Court judgment on the Rivers and Akwa Ibom State elections would amount to a major political inconsistency that is aberration to the political frame work of the country.
And the Nigerian Students in South South and South East under the umbrella of NANS will reject same with any means possible.
Mr. Amadu Attai; APC Chairman in Akwa Ibom State, had made unsavory statements instead of behaving like his Colleague in Rivers state; Dr. Davis Ikanya, who has called on APC members in Rivers to remain calm, knowing fully well that the decision of the Supreme Court is final in this context.
May it be stated in clear and candid terms that NANS as the apex Students’ association in the country is by no means taking sides with any of the political parties, neither PDP nor APC, involved in the ongoing political scuffle in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.
Her stance on the issue is politically neutral, aligning with the law and due process. Our law puts the Supreme Court as final resort on all legal matters, within Nigeria.
As such, it’s judgements are final and must be respected.
This fruitless attempt to bring this revered institution to disrepute by the APC must be condemned in totality, by all people of good conscience.
Finally, we congratulate Gov. Nyesom Wike and the Rivers people and also congratulate H.E Deacon Emmanuel Udom; Governor of Akwa Ibom State and the good people of Akwa Ibom State, particularly our fellow Students on the Governor’s well deserved victory at the Supreme Court.
We call on them to embrace and work with all citizens of their states irrespective of party affiliation as election has come and gone and governance demands inclusiveness, which we no doubt believes they can do.
We assure them of NANS continued support for their peoples oriented and Student friendly programmes.
We specifically thank the Governor of Akwa Ibom state for appointing many past leaders of NANS to work with him in lifting Akwa Ibom State to a greater height.
Obi Pedro, Coordinator, NANS ZONE B
