From Christian Chime, Onitsha
The National Assembly Elections Petitions tribunal sitting in Awka has been told that the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) presented no candidate in the Njikoka/Anaocha/Dunukofia Federal constituency of Anambra state in the just concluded general 3lections in the country.
Making the disclosure in the jampacked court room at tje Anambra Judiciary Headquarters, venue of the tribunal sitting, the Constituency’s Returning Officer -Prof Nnagbo Okigbo said that he asked/clarified openly and it was confirmed the party had no candidate at the poll.
That he was surprised how a party/person that didnt stand in the electoral contest was later to the chagrin of all announced winner.
The distinguished university don who was led in evidence by Dr Kayode Fatoke,a Senior Advocate(SAN),the lead prosecution counsel to Chief Dozie Nwankwo of All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) won the election.
Another witness and constituent of the area, Mr Ilonuba said voters celebrated immensely after massively voting Hon Dozie Nwankwo during the February 2019 general election.
Ilonuba, during cross examination told the 3-man tribunal panel that they rejoiced after casting their votes because they all supported Nwankwo of APGA and needed him reelected to enable him continue the numerous good works he’s been doing for them.
More so that no other party of note, especially the PDP presented no candidate in the Federal Constituency for the poll.
So it was like Nwankwo was coating to landslide victory, hence the constituents’ open excitement after casting their votes for him.
The visibly confident witness didn’t mince words in saying he wasn’t aware of any other list from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)that showed any candidate whatsoever for the PDP for the particular election in the constituency.
According to the witness, “when I came back at about 5pm on the election day after casting my vote, all the people everywhere, particularly APGA members were rejoicing for Dozie Nwankwo…”
The tribunal adjourned to July 4,2019 when the counsel representing the INEC would present their witnesses.
