NLC Condemn The Killing Of African Migrant Workers By Militant Groups In Libya
The attention of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been drawn to the recent humiliation, torture, and killing of African migrant workers by militant groups in Libya.
Of recent, this savage treatment of migrant workers has become rampant in the Libyan city of Tarhuna. The NLC stands in solidarity with the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and all African workers in condemning this un-African, evil, and barbaric development.
“We posit that infractions on the right of migrant workers in Libya are direct affront to Convention 97 on Migration for Employment and Convention 29 on Forced and Compulsory labour of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The despicable treatment of foreign workers in Libya also constitutes a fundamental and grave violation of the United Nations Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and their Families.
“The NLC calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Libya. We demand that all foreign countries fueling the Libyan bloodbath cease and desist. Libya should not be turned into a bloodied chess board of multinational interests.
“Finally, we empathize with migrant workers who have suffered harm and personal losses in Libya and elsewhere. We demand justice, restitution, and punishment for the evil done to workers whose only crime is the struggle to make some living for themselves and their families. Enough is enough!” said Comrade Ayuba Wabba, President, NLC and ITUC.
