No National Identity Number, No International Passport

The federal government has concluded plans to make National Identification Number (NIN) compulsory for obtaining an International Passport, targetting to reach over 170 million Nigerians at the end of 2019.

To that effect, the Nigerian Immigration Service [NIS] is finalising moves to adopt a “No National Identity Number, No International Passport” policy, ElombahNews gathered.

NIS, however, denied reports that it will ‘implement ‘No National ID Card, No International Passport’ Policy’, saying it is “misinforming”.

Reacting to the report by Nairaland on its Twitter page, NIMC stated:

With this development, application for international passport will be preceded by obtaining NIN by applicants.

Recently, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Muhammad Musa Bello had announced that NIN, henceforth, is mandatory for land allocation within FCT.

Mr. Bello said this in a statement issued by head of corporate communication of National Identity Management Commission [NIMC], Mr. Loveday Ogbonna, in Abuja, and made available to ElombahNews.

The Minister expressed the need for every land allocated to be matched to an individual through NIN.

This, according to him, is to track and prevent multiple allocations of land and ensure fairness and equity in the allocation process.

Bello commended the NIMC Director General, Engr. Aliyu Aziz, for the astronomical increase in enrollment figures.

He also commended the measures put in place to ensure safety of data of Nigerians and legal residents in the National Identity database (NIDB) while ensuring credibility and integrity of data collected.

He noted that the ongoing Harmonization effort is a step in the right direction to check duplication of functions amongst data collecting agencies.

Reacting, Aziz appreciated the Minister for the support he has rendered to NIMC and assured him of continued collaboration until the full objectives are achieved.

Meanwhile, some serious corporate organisations like the FRSC, NIS, CBN and other government agencies are already implementing the NIMC Act.
