Northern lawyers seek new Nigeria Bar Association, write Malami
Northern lawyers have moved for the formation of a New Nigeria Bar Association (NNBA) following the saga involving the Association’s virtual annual general meeting and the governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.
This was contained in a letter dated 28th August, 2020, signed by the conveners of the new group, Barrister Nuhu Ibrahim and Barrister Abdulbasit Suleiman.
To that effect, the Northern lawyers wrote the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami informing him about the decision.
Recall that NBA had withdrawn the invitation it issued to Governor El-Rufai as one of its guest speakers at the meeting.
Following the decision to withdraw the invitation, some aggrieved Northern lawyers had pulled out from the conference.
The Northern lawyers stated that the formation of the new group is imperative, especially as a result of the disposition of NBA National Electoral Commission (NEC).
The letter stated:
“Sir, the New Nigerian Bar Association believes in the ideals that bound our country together as echoed in our national anthem, The Labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain.”
It says further:
“You are, however, to be informed that work is in progress with regards to all the nitty-gritty of the formation of the Association.”
The group also promised to keep the minister updated.
