Nzuko Ora Nnewi: A Case of Lost Identity and Public Caricature

By Ugochukwu Ifeanyi

Even as Ndi Nnewi worldwide are still hiding their heads in utter shame over the intrusion of nonentities into the affairs of Nzuko Ora Nnewi, which culminated in the supposed suspension of the Publicity Secretary, Mr Augustine Ikeh aka Ikedoji, lots of questions still linger and more on its legality

In order to understand the shameful state of things in Nnewi now, it is important to note some fundamental facts

It is the apex and autonomous institution in Nnewi geared towards the development of Nnewi. It is made up of the 4 quarters: Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewichi. It’s supreme administration lies with the Board of Trustees

It is important to note that Nzuko Ora Nnewi doesn’t have any portfolio labeled ‘stakeholders’ and thus, that term is illegal which means a decision taken by it is null and void

The Board of Trustees is made up of 8 members ie 2 persons from each quarter of Nnewi, duly elected yearly at the Annual General Meeting.

The Board is the highest authority over everybody and all matters in Nnewi.. Note that the Igwe is NOT a member of the Board of Trustees and even he is subject to the decision of this body

The Board has custody of the Seal of Nzuko Ora Nnewi

The Board is vested with all properties of Nnewi Town, in the interest of Nnewi Town

In the case of any dispute that threatens the existence of Nzuko Ora, the Board shall take over the affairs of The Nzuko Ora while using every means necessary to bring swift and lasting solutions to the issue, then return powers back to the ELECTED executive committee, not later than 1 year

It is important to note that ONLY the Board has the right to sit, judge, evaluate, nullify suspend, expel and or reinstate any elected elective member as well as Ndi Nnewi in general

The office of the Publicity Secretary is tasked with:

a. Publication of the activities of the Nzuko Ora through mass media (traditional and new)

It is important to note that the Publicity Secretary, is empowered by the Constitution of Nzuko Ora to react to all publications made on, about, for or against Nzuko Ora as well as Ndi Nnewi in general

Now we have established these ground rules, we shall look back at what happened a couple of days ago, put them beside the Constitution of Nzuko Ora Nnewi as enumerated above and see if it is legal and in tandem with the code of conduct as well as establishment of the body

Kindly note that this body acts purely in the interests of Ndi Nnewi always and is not subject to any government interference neither is it susceptible to external influences of any kind

A. The Genesis

Trouble began when a stinker credited to one C. Don Adinuba, the supposed Commissioner for Information of Anambra State, titled ANAMBRA COVID-19 ACCOUNT: A CLARIFICATION, hit the media waves

In this clownish if not childish publication, the Adinuba struggled to piece together an intelligent line of thought but instead, clearly launched an unprovoked attack on an Onye Nnewi, who out of his own ingenuity, gathered his friends and juggernauts of Anambra origin, to join hands in setting up facilities to help in combating the pandemic… This was the crux of the matter

Kindly recall that the office of the Publicity Secretary of Nzuko Ora Nnewi, is mandated by the constitution to react in any way deemed fit to publications made on Nzuko Ora and Ndi Nnewi.. It was in line with his constitutional powers and directives, that Ikedoji intelligently replied the Commissioner adequately, advising him to desist from slandering the image of Ndi Nnewi on a whim

B. The Outcome

The Commissioner, apparently bamboozled by the reply of Mr Augustine Ike, took offence instead of taking correction and thus, began a gimmick which would lead to the public caricature of Nnewi, which had never happened before in our history

C. The Plot

Armed with an executive order (which was later denied), alongside a horde of sycophants who termed themselves ‘Nnewi Stakeholders’ who have little or no knowledge and respect for Nnewi, convened a meeting at the Royal Palace to discuss the expulsion/suspension of a duly elected executive member of Nzuko Ora Nnewi

Kindly recall above, that only the Board of Trustees have the right to look into all issues as pertaining to Nzuko Ora .. Also recall that Nzuko Ora doesn’t recognise the powers of Igwe Nnewi in such issues neither does it recognise any acronym known as Nnewi Stakeholders

D. The Calamity

These unknown, unrecognized and non existent group known as Nnewi Stakeholders, decided to try and evict a duly elected executive member of Nzuko Ora.. This is null and void as they lack the jurisdiction and constitutional backing to attempt such an exercise in futility

It was based on this illegal resolution, that the Uruagu Community erroneously hinged their decision to accept the suspension of Sir Augustine Ike

1. Since when did the issues of Nzuko Ora Nnewi, get presided by Igwe Nnewi and not the duly appointed Chairman of Nzuko Ora Nnewi in the presence of the Assembly or the Board of Trustees

2. Since when did the executive committee of Nzuko Ora Nnewi start meeting at the Royal Palace to discuss issues?

3. Why were the executive members of Nzuko Ora Nnewi absent including the Chairman, except for 2

4. On what authority and on which constitutional backing did these Nnewi Stakeholders base their intrusion into the affairs of the apex body in Nnewi?

5. Till date, the Board of Trustees have not being briefed about this illegality and thus, have no idea that it’s Publicity Secretary has become a victim of kangaroo justice right here in Nnewi. Why weren’t they carried along?

1. The decision to suspend or expel Ikedoji is purely academic and perhaps for comical purposes, clearly not meant to be taken seriously or to heart

2. Until duly suspended and/or expelled by the Board of Trustees as is the due process, Ikedoji remains the Publicity Secretary of Nzuko Ora Nnewi

3. If the Chairman of Nzuko Ora Nnewi cannot defend the constitution that empowers him even till date by rejecting such absurd decision on a member of his exco, then perhaps it is time for the BOT to step in and restore normalcy to the body

4. Adinuba and his likes have no right to malign, ridicule, abuse or insult Onye Nnewi regardless of age and status as such a childish action, will always be met with an appropriate response always

5. All Nzuko Ora meetings are held at the Nnewi Secretariat or any other designated location as requested and presided by the Chairman ONLY

6. The constitution of Nzuko Ora doesn’t accept and accommodate the suspension of Ikedoji outside the due process

I hereby encourage Ikedoji to continue discharging his duties as the Publicity Secretary of Nzuko Ora Nnewi, which he accepted under oath to Nnewi Town and Ndi Nnewi, to the best of his abilities and not to get side tracked
