The PDP Governorship candidate for the 2017 election in Anambra State, Mr. Oseloka H. Obaze, has urged youths to eschew violence and engage in the electioneering process to ensure a peaceful poll.
He stated this during the “Vote Not Fight” campaign interactive session organized by National Democratic Institute (NDI) in collaboration with YoungStars Development Initiative, Initiative (YDI), Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA) and 2Face Idibia Foundation in Awka.
Mr. Obaze, who lauded the initiative, said youths can be involved through advocacy, registration and sensitization against voter apathy.
He bemoaned the spate of fake news and hate speech that characterize elections in Nigeria insisting his campaign will continue to be issues-based while revealing his campaign team had a policy of zero tolerance for mudslinging.
The former United Nations official praised popular musician, 2Face Idibia, for being the face of the campaign since inception and doing so on a pro-bono basis; a gesture that ensured that people first focus their attention first on the celebrity and consequently on the message.
He promised to link the “Vote Not Fight” webpage to his campaign webpage for broader access.
In his response, 2Face Idibia whose real name is, Innocent Idibia, praised Mr. Obaze for his humility and for taking out time to come and support the campaign saying, “your presence here today will go a long way to let Anambra Youths know the calibre of man you are, we really appreciate your support and presence here and we wish you all the best”.
Speaking earlier, country director of YoungStars revealed that the campaign which was launched in 2014 comes with three approaches including Work with celebrity, grassroot mobilization and social media sensitization.
The youths trained under this initiative become ambassadors of the campaign in the target State.
Also speaking, the country Director of NDI, Aubrey Mccutcheon said they’re honoured that Mr. Obaze is the first candidate they are meeting in this exercise saying that the election in Anambra State in two months will really set the tone for future elections.
