Police Brutality: Open letter to President Mohammadu Buhari
By Festus Ifeanyi Anagwu, London
His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Presidential Villa Abuja Nigeria
ORGANISED BRUTALITY BY OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE NIGERIA POLICE: (1) NNEBUE FELIX (AREA COMMANDER, OMUMA POLICE STATION, ORU EAST LGA, IMO STATE) AND (2) SERGEANT OKOI EFE (DIVISIONAL POLICE HEADQUARTERS, OMUMA)
The above subject refers. This is to bring to your notice and to the notice of network of all human rights groups operating in Nigeria, United Kingdom and United States of America the totally unacceptable act of inhuman brutality visited to my cousin, Chimezie Obi, by the above mentioned officers and men of the Nigeria Police.
Chimezie Obi is a young Nigerian graduate who has finished serving Nigeria in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme. Because of the prevailing unemployment situation in Nigeria, Chimezie Obi took to business and industry as the only available means of survival, investing the little savings he had during the NYSC.
He began to buy palm kernel, grind same and extract the oil which he supplies to vegetable oil processing firms. This is how Chimezie, my cousin, has been managing to survive. Out of cheer envy, some locals, who felt intimidated by Chimezie’s gradual success in the business, organised and bought over Mr. Felix Nnebue (Area Commander Omuma) and Sergeant Okoi Efe to arrest and brutalise Chimezie.
Chimezie’s offence is that as a man who has many clients demanding his product, he is able to make good turnovers and as such, is able to buy the palm kernel at a rate higher than what the locals can buy the commodity.
As a result, sellers of palm kernel at Omuma and environs prefer to sell to Chimezie because they make more profit selling to him. Other local buyers of the commodity who felt threatened by the small boy’s energy and astuteness organised and bought over men of the Nigeria police to arrest Chimezie and Brutalise him. This unfortunate incident (arrest and brutalisation) happened on Thursday 8 October 2020 at Omuma in the Oru East LGA of Imo State. Your Excellency,
Sir, this is another totally unacceptable affront, the brutalisation of innocent Nigerian youth by the Nigerian police force which we are ready to go in for.
This letter is merely to bring this unacceptable brutality of a young industrious and innocent Nigerian youth to your notice and that of the international community. Now, the matter has gone to Federal High Court, Owerri, and we choose not to say anything further pending the determination of the matter in court, at which time we will correspond further.
Yours faithfully, Festus Ifeanyi Anagwu London, United Kingdom Email: email@example.com Phone: +447840199803
