Port Harcourt Youths Defy Wike, Begin EndSARS Protest

Despite Governor Nyeson Wike decision banning EndSARS Protest, hundreds of people marched in Port Harcourt on Tuesday against police brutality.

Newsom Wike, the governor of Rivers state, had in a statement issued outlawed the protest and ordered law-enforcement agencies to prevent the march. Organizers posted messages on social media urging people to join the protest, insisting it would be peaceful.

Law enforcement agencies are also directed to ensure that the ban is enforced and that violators are brought to book,” Paulinus Nsirim, the state commissioner for information, said in a statement on Twitter.

The protests first erupted Oct. 5 after a video of the killing of a civilian by a controversial police unit was shared on social media. President Muhammadu Buhari announced Sunday he’s disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, which has been accused by rights groups of widespread abuses.
