The whereabouts of Mr. Gideon Ekere, the Editor-in-Chief of Global Post Newspaper, has remained unknown since he was whisked away on Saturday by armed persons believed to be security agents acting on the orders of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel.
This is the second incident in days interval after the Akwa Ibom State Correspondent of the Punch Newspaper, Mr. Etim Ekpimah was arrested by the police.
Mr. Ekpimah was arrested on Friday while performing his legitimate duties but was later released from police custody after being illegally detained.
In this latest incident, Ekere, a fine journalist and columnist whose column, The Conscience, on the back page of his tabloid, attracts huge readership, was last seen on Friday, September , 2015.
According to the reporter, Ofonime Honesty, recently, Mr. Ekere expressed worry over his safety, alleging that security agents had earmarked him for assassination or arrest.
He also raised alarm over alleged tapping of his phone lines as well as hacking of his website and email accounts.
His abduction has raised eyebrows especially in the media circle.
Meanwhile, no security agency has claimed responsibility for Ekere’s disappearance but journalists and the general public are comparing the issue with that of Thomas Tomas, who was arrested and held in DSS custody amidst denial by the agency.
The leadership of the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists [NUJ] is yet to issue a statement on the issue.
