The Chief of Staff to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Professor Joseph Asike, has lost his wife in the United States.
The wife, Marie-France Asike, was born in Haiti and studied at the world famous Jesuit University of Louvain in Belgium where she met her future husband who was then a doctoral candidate in philosophy.
Mrs Asike, an academic like the husband, taught at the University of Ibadan from the late 1970s and then relocated to the United States with the husband, who was to become the chair of the Department of Philosophy at Howard University in Washington, DC.
Mrs Asike, who died on August 31 at age 61, enjoyed 39 years of blissful marriage with Professor Asike. Both the husband and all other family members were by her side when she passed on.
She passed away on August 31, 2017 at the age of 63, with her husband and children by her side in her home of 23 years in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Daughter of Henri and Gisele Mangones of Haiti and sister to Henri Mangones and Genevieve Armand, Mrs Asike was loved and admired by all who had the good fortune o had an unquestionable zest for life and was generous to all.
A requiem mass will be celebrated for her on Friday, September 8 at St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, with a Repass the same day at midday at MSGR Richard Hughes Family Life Centre, 4610 Largo Rd in Upper Marlboro. Interment will be on Saturday, September 9 at the Resurrection Cemetery at 8000 Woodyard Rd, Clinton, Maryland.
Known for her commitment to social justice in her professional and private life, Mrs Asike is survived by Professor Asike and their children, namely, Dr. Michael Asike, a gastroenterologist at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and his wife Deondra Asik;, Chuka Asike, Foreign Service afficer at the US Department of State; Sophie Asike, Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maryland; Cynthia Valentine, Payne Fellowship Program Manager at Howard University, and her husband Todd Valentine, and grandchildren, Avery and Brooklyn Valentine.
