BREAKING: CCT Judge Issues Arrest Warrant On Onnoghen
Tension in court
Information from the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) says that the CCT Chairman, Justice Danladi Umar has, on Wednesday, issued a warrant of arrest against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.
The warrant followed a prayer by the federal government’s prosecution team requesting for a warrant following his failure to appear before the Tribunal.
ElombahNews gathered that the CCT chairman order the Nigerian Police and the Department of Security Service [DSS] to arrest and produce him in court on or before the next hearing date.
See the original report below:
Lead prosecution lawyer, Aliyu Umar (SAN) against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has applied for warrant of arrest against the embattled CJN.
The federal government’s prosecutors made the application at the resumption of proceedings on Wednesday morning.
Recall that the chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar had ordered Onnoghen to unfailingly appear before him during the last hearing.
Justice Umar noted that Onnoghen has deliberately absented himself from the tribunal since the proceedings commenced.
He said both the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and the Practice Direction of the CCT provides that a defendant must be present in court before any proceedings can be conducted in respect of a pending charge.
Lawyer to the defendant, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), onhis part, urged the court to reject the prayer for issuance of an arrest warrant against Onnoghen.
Presently there is palpable tension in the court regarding the prayer sought by the prosecution.
More details of the day’s proceeding will follow.
In the meantime, see the tweet by Mazi Chima Amadi below:
Information reaching me now suggests that Bayo Ojo led a team to Onnoghen’s house by 11pm to force him to sign a resignation or risk arrest this morning cos PMB wants the resignation b4 Friday. I hear that there is plan to arrest and forge his signature in a resignation letter.
