REAVEALED: Why APC leaders from Enugu East stayed away from unity rally
As Enugu East Senatorial District held a so-called unity rally on Thursday, it was obvious that a number of the members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) who also hail from that zone stayed away from the rally.
Speaking with ElombahNews on Friday, a party faithful said the boycott was owing to the fact that the rally was highjacked by persons who turned the event into a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) rally.
Earlier on, it had been hinted that members of the APC who were members of the district were likely to stay away from the rally which was originally proposed to be one of solidarity towards the 2023 Guber elections.
It has been gathered that besides the Party Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, who attended the event, no notable stakeholder from the APC was seen at the event.
The event which was adjudged a PDP event, has billboards and other indicators at the event which led to the APC stalwarts refusal to set foot at the rally grounds.
Big names like Senator Ken Nnamani, one time Senate President and member representing the South East at the Caretaker Committee of the APC, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Member representing the SouthEast in the Police Service Commission, Princess Ada Ogbu, Senatorial Candidate in the 2019 elections, Barrister Ifeanyi Nwoga, gubernatorial aspirant 2019 elections, Hon. Maduka Nelson Arum, House of Reps aspirant 2019 elections and a host of other APC leaders from the zone were noticeably absent.
The party faithful mentioned earlier said that “there was a general feeling that no true APC member would attend an obvious PDP event as evidenced by the billboards and attendance of persons at the rally.
“This did go to show that the rally had been highjacked.”
Another source who spoke to this medium went stated that “even the communique released at the rally passed a vote of confidence on the governor.
“How then do we tell our party people to mobilize properly for the forthcoming elections?
“How then will we approach the people in 2023 to sell our Party’s manifesto and candidate to them had we attended a rally like that?
“Surprisingly the offensive communique was also signed by the APC state party chairman, to the disquiet of a host of party members in the state.
“Such a stance was one taken on principles and thankfully we know that we have done right thing,” he stressed.
See below the communique issued at the end of the Oganiru Enugu East Senatorial District rally held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, Enugu State on 17th June, 2021:
“Impelled by the noble ideals of honour, gratitude, and a deep sense of responsibility, the people of Enugu East Senatorial District, rising’ above the usual encumbrances of partisan politics, converged at the Okpara Square, Independence Layout, Enugu, today, 17th of June 2021, and reaffirmed their earlier Vote of Confidence in the leadership of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Governor of Enugu State.
The gathering expressed its deep satisfaction with the unrelenting steps taken by his administration to enthrone peace, security good governance and foster an inclusive philosophy and notes that this has given everyone a sense of belonging regardless of creed and cultural affinity.
The gathering, quite fittingly reiterated its categorical support for the sustenance of the long established rotational template in the state with regards to the office of the Governor of the State.
The gathering noted that this template has helped in no small measure to nurture peace, security and harmonious co-existence in the state and therefore should not be taken for granted.
The gathering noted that this rotational template, having gone round the 3 senatorial zones of the state, should orderly swing back in the direction of Enugu East Senatorial District come 2023.
The gathering therefore unanimously pledged its support to the progressive and trend -setting Governor, and urged him to remain steadfast in upholding this time-tested template.
It urges all other senatorial zones which have taken benefit of this functional template to lend it’s support for it’s sustenance.
Being convinced that it is the turn of Enugu East to produce a Governor come 2023, the gathering assured His Excellency, that standing by him, they are fully prepared in all fronts – physically, psychologically, spiritually, financially, or indeed anywhere/how otherwise to defend the sustenance of this ennobling template.
The gathering noted that whereas it is not unaware that in the nature of politics, there would always be some fifth columnists whose values are essentially defined by greed; but as a people, we have always chosen to never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by ignorance.”
