Information available to Elombah.com indicates that Sir Victor Umeh’s arrest by the Department of State Security, DSS, is not unconnected to the allegation of receiving 11 billion naira on behalf of APGA from the $2.1 billion arms deal involving the former NSA, Dasuki.
The DSS today arrested Umeh, former national chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, and some of his former lieutenants, Mr. Dasuki was arraigned before an Abuja High Court on a 19-count charge of money laundering and breach of public trust.
Elombah.com had reported that Mr. Dasuki distributed billions of naira meant for arms purchase for the fight against the insurgent Boko Haram group, to politicians, his cronies and family members.
Stan Okeke, Umeh’s spokesman, confirmed the arrest, saying the APGA chieftain was picked up from his Enugu residence on Thursday morning.
Okeke said Umeh was accused of sponsoring activities of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He also alleged that Uche Ekwunife, Umeh’s arch-rival, and Peter Obi, former Anambra state governor, had written a petition against the APGA chieftain.
The DSS had not made any official statement on allegations against Umeh, however, information reaching us reveals that Umeh is currently undergoing interrogation at DSS headquarters.
But a source said Umeh was arrested on the allegation from an APGA member and his former aide on diaspora that Umeh between 2011 and 2015 general elections got about 11 billion naira from FG to adopt Jonathan as APGA presidential candidate.
One Engr Campbell, the current Deputy National Organising Secretary of APGA led by Victor Oye had also alleged that Umeh embezzled about 11 billion naira, ex president Jonathan released to APGA for adopting him.
Meanwhile, former governor of Anambra State to the accusation by Victor Umeh’s Media Assistant, Mr. Stan Okeke, that Obi was behind Umeh’s travails.
Mr. Peter Obi speaking through his media aide, Valentine Obienyem has pleaded with Chief Victor Umeh to leave his boss alone.
Mr. Valentine Obienyem’s full statement made available to Elombah.com reads:
“I read the news credited to Mr. Stan Okeke that Mr. Peter Obi was behind the arrest of Chief Victor Umeh. Let me state for the avoidance of doubt that Mr. Peter Obi has not, and is not contemplating writing any petition against anybody. He did not do so as a Governor, and could not have started doing so now.
If you have been following political development in Anambra State in the last one month, you would have noticed Chief Victor Umeh’s obsession with Mr. Peter Obi for reasons only him and his associates/aides know. Within the one month under review, Chief Umeh has said all sorts of despicable things against Obi. While campaigning in Agulu(Obi’s home town), he referred to Peter Obi as a useless man and said that 1000 Peter Obi’s would not stop him. At another place, he said that Obi was possessed by the devil and needed to be exorcized.
When the People’s Democratic Party went to court for the sole reason that the party should be allowed to be part of the election, Chief Victor Umeh said it was Obi that actually went to court in a case that will not affect his candidature in any way. He even went on to say other unprintable things about Obi, including how, in his imagination, Obi suborned judicial officers.
Reviewing Umeh and his political associates’ activities against Obi, one would easily notice the desperation to impugn Obi’s integrity, destroy him politically and pitch the masses against him. Even when Obi has chosen the option of ignoring them, they are becoming more desperate and are seeing to contrive one scandal or another against him. The other day, they sponsored the story of Obi’s alleged divorce/estrangement with his wife.
That Obi is loved among his people and Nigerians is not the reason why some people, after it downed on them that they could not destroy him, are plotting to pitch him against his people and Nigerians.”
