Senate Approves N53 billion for Security agencies for 2019 General elections
Senate on Tuesday approved N53 billion for the operations of Security agencies for the 2019 general elections making the total fund appropriated for next year elections hit N242.4 billion.
President Muhammadu Buhari had requested for the virement of N242 billion in the 2018 Appropriation Act.
Last week both Senate and House of Representative approved N189 billion for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to procure materials for the 2019 general elections.
Presenting the report for consideration, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Danjuma Goje said N4.2 billion is earmarked for Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Department of State Services (DSS) – N12.2 billion, Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps (NSDC)- N3.5 billion, Nigeria Police Force (NPF)- N30.5 billion and Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS)- N2.6 billion.
According to the report, fund will be sourced from Both recurrent and capital components of Special Intervention Programme captured in the Service Wide Votes of the 2018 Appropriation Act.
The report of the committee said having considered the report of its sub-committee on INEC, Security and Intelligence, Interior, and Police Affairs in respect of the provision for INEC, NSA, DSS, NSCDC and NIS and NPF respectively and worked in conjunction with the other relevant House Sub-committee is working out the details of the request as follows:
“The aggregate of N242 billion only be approved as virement for the General elections operations for INEC and the above named security agencies which will increase the 2018 budget of the agencies.
