Senate Panel on Thursday accused the chairman of National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, (NAHCON) Abdullahi Muhammad of evading investigation of the ad-hoc Committee.
The Ad-hoc committee however threatened to issue warrant of arrest on him if fails to present all the necessary documents that would aid the investigation to the Panel.
Addressing Journalists, the chairman of the ad-hoc Committee investigating the Commission , Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero lamented that despite the series of communication sent to the chairman of the commission, the committee is yet to receive any document up till date from him.
Ailero who listed some of the documents requested from the chairman of the Commission to the newsmen said the committee would have no other option than to invoke relevant section of the constitution on him if he fails to comply within seven days.
According to him, the documents requested are details of 2017 hajj operations, details of funding, internally generated revenue with annual amount, names and addresses of banks with treasury single account, TSA and evidences of remittance to the government coffers.
Other requirements are details of all contract awarded by the commission, its audited accounts, total number of pilgrims, air carriers and fares charged by them, among others.
He said, “Of all the letters the committee wrote to the NAHCON, none was replied by the chairman. Though they claimed the communications were received at the pick of 2017 hajj, and we accepted that since we didn’t want to be seen as saboturs of the important holy exercise.
“Again, the committee sent another letter to the commission after the hajj and there was no reply. Another one was sent on 14th of August and up till now, there is no reply or response from the chairman.
“We are going to send another one after which we will give the chairman 14 days ultimatum for warrant of arrest to be served on him. We will not rest on our oars as a committee to get to the root of the matter.”
In his comment during the press conference , Senator Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP Abia North) explained clarified that the committee was not out to witch-hunt the NAHCOH chairman, but to further investigate all allegations surrounding the hajj.
