Although President Donald Trump has described Thursday’s use of Mother Of All Bombs (MOAB), in a remote area in Afghanistan as a ‘huge success’, there are a few things he has not told the American public.
The first is that the ‘The Mother of All Bombs’ (MOAB), which weighs 20,000 pounds, is not the biggest non-nuclear bomb in the USA armoury.
The United States has GPS guided 30,000-pound bombs, at least 20 of them, made by Aerospace giant Boeing Co. They are called Massive Ordnance Penetrators.
The first batch of the bombs was delivered in 2011 at a total cost of about $314 million.
According to a report by Los Angeles Times, the bombs are nearly five tons heavier than anything else in the military’s arsenal and they are meant to pulverise underground enemy hide-outs.
The bombs were designed to be dropped on targets by the Boeing-made B-52 Stratofortress long-range bomber or Northrop Grumman Corp.’s B-2 stealth bomber.
Packed with more than 5,300 pounds of explosives and more than 20 feet long, the giant bunker-busting bombs were tested at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, the site of the first atomic bomb test during World War II.
The man who has pointed this out is the fugitive NSA contractor Edward Snowden, now living in Russia.
The second shocking revelation by Snowden is that the tunnels and caves targeted by the MOAB were possibly built by the United States.
“Those mujahedeen tunnel networks we’re bombing in Afghanistan? We paid for them,” Snowden wrote on Twitter, attaching an excerpt from a 2005 New York Times article, which suggested that the construction of the Tora Bora cave complex in the province of Nangarhar was financed by the CIA in 1980.
At that period, Washington supported Mujahedeen, who fought against the Soviet military in the country. One of the members of the Mujahedeen was Osama Bin Laden, who later fell out with America.
According to earlier media reports, a 9.5-tonne GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, nicknamed MOAB, was dropped at 7 p.m. local time Thursday. The bomb was dropped by an MC-130 aircraft, operated by Air Force Special Operations Command.
CNN reported citing its military sources that “the target was ISIS tunnels and personnel in the Achin district of the Nangarhar province.” Snowden said the bomb was dropped in the middle of ‘nowhere’
