Supreme Court backs INEC, sweeps away 74 political parties
The Supreme Court has thrown its weight behind the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the deregistration of 74 parties.
Ruling on Friday, the apex court upheld the Court of Appeal ruling in support of deregistration of the said 74 political parties.
Recall that INEC had, in 2020, deregistered the parties over their inability to win any election during the 2019 general elections.
In the judgment delivered by Justice China Nweze, the Supreme Court said deregistration of the 74 parties was in line with the laws and compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act.
