Suspected mastermind of Imo priest’s murder arrested during wedding


Imo State Police Command have arrested the suspected mastermind of the kidnap and murder of Rev Fr. Cyriacus Onukwo in the state. It would be recalled that Onunkwo was kidnapped and killed on September 1, 2017 by some gang of kidnappers.

The reverend father, who hailed from Osina in Ideato North local government area of Imo State had returned from abroad to bury his father before he was abducted and his lifeless body recovered at Omuma in Oru East Local Government Area Imo State.

The suspect, identified as Charles Nnanna, was said to have been elusive since the incident as he was said to have fled to Indonesia and had been on the wanted list, according to the police.

However, luck ran against him when he was arrested on the February 16 while performing his traditional wedding ceremony.

The spokesman of the police in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, who confirmed the arrest said that at about 5:40pm, at Aji in Oru East Local Government Area Imo State, operatives of the commands Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arrested Charles Nnanna of Aji in Oru East Local Government Area, Imo State.

Ikeokwu said, “It is note worthy that on the 1/09/2017 at about 08:35pm, some kidnappers operating in a Toyota Avalon car kidnapped one Rev, Fr. Cyriacus Onunkwo a native of Osina who came home to bury his late Father, consequently, his lifeless body was later recovered a day later at Omuma in Oru East Local Government Area Imo State.

He added, “Upon Investigation into this matter all the suspects were rounded up except Charles Nnanna, who fled to Indonesia.

However, based on credible intelligence, he was arrested during his traditional wedding ceremony. He has confessed to the crime as well as his role in the operation. He will be prosecuted accordingly.”
