*We built the flyovers according to designs – contractor * Users strongly advised to please avoid those flyovers for personal safety for now
Elombah.com is in possession of a picture showing cracks on the walls of the new flyovers constructed by the administration of Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano.
The picture and accompanying report were submitted by our correspondent, Eneh Victor Chigozie.
The report reads:
The contractor doing the three flyovers at Awka has confirmed that they built the three flyovers according to designs presented to them by Gov. Willie Obiano.
Speaking on behalf of the contractors, one of their staff who pleaded utmost confidentiality said that the company cautioned the Governor to take the project easy as big projects like that are not rushed unnecessary.
But he always told us that he wanted to build what he called signature projects that will make the people feel there was a change.
He boasted that he had enough money for such projects, pointing out at that early time, the amount he inherited from his predecessor.
He revealed that even when they mentioned the idea of getting authorization as his predecessor did whenever he worked on federal roads, the Governor said he did not have time for protocols.
“We went as far as meeting the then Commissioner for Works, Mr. Callistus Ilozumba, who expressed genuine fear and worries over the unusual haste surrounding the project.”
“He said that he was not part of the bidding and design for the project as the Governor, against all professional advice, preferred to use his Aguleri brothers.
“As contractors, we presented our observations but had to go on with the project as designed and presented to us.
“Nobody should blame us, even the engraving of the Governor’s name all over the project was contained in the design, we did not add anything.”
When asked about cracks in parts of the bridge, the contractor laughed and said the reporter should not go to that area.
When we brought to his notice the fact that some organizations are writing petitions pointing to the structural anomalies vis-a-vis the variation of the contract from 5 billion Naira to 15 billion Naira, he, denying knowledge of any cracks.
He said that people would not understand the politics and intrigues associated with the contract.
He said: “Yes you heard about many billions, but we work according to the amount that finally came to us.
“Even beyond that, we are still owed whopping amount of money on the project.
“The Governor wanted the project completed in time; he was on us that we even used our own money, which, naturally, affected quality.”
On the delay in completing the road from Amansea to Amawbia junction, the contractor said that the former Commissioner explained to them that the money set aside for the completion of the road was used for the flyovers.
He assured that once they are paid and extra money released to them, that they would complete the project.
APGA Interactive Forum could not get the reaction of the present Commissioner for Works, Arc Law Chinwuba, who ignored our repeated calls.
