Tribunal: Octogenarian Ben Nwabueze Leads Atiku/PDP Legal Team
Renown constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze (SAN), appeared for the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the lead counsel at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja on Thursday.
The octogenarian was brought into the courtroom on a wheelchair having difficulty walking.
As the Justice Mohammed Garba-led tribunal assumed their seats, Prof. Nwabueze prayed the court to be allowed to be seated while addressing the bench and his wish was granted.
He then announced the names of other lawyers appearing with him after which he hand over the role to Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), who had been leading the team from the beginning.
After the announcement of appearances, Nwabueze expressed gratitude to the tribunal for granting his first request.
He said: “The determination of the petition will certainly impact on future elections and constitutionalism in the country.”
He said that notwithstanding his age and attendant health challenges, he attended the proceedings to underscore the importance of the case.
After the short speech, he took permission to leave the courtroom and was wheeled out of the courtroom when his request was granted.
