UN, ECOWAS ‘notes’ Niger presidential poll results

The United Nations and the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) on Thursday said they had taken note of the provisional results of the second round of Niger’s presidential election.
In a joint statement, the organisations congratulated Nigeriens for their “great mobilisation and peaceful participation” in the election.
However, they strongly condemned acts of violence trailing the announcement of the results by the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission.
Underscoring the need for restraint, they urged all stakeholders to explore legal channels in resolving their electoral disputes.
No fewer than two people have reportedly died in violent protests staged by supporters of the opposition and losing candidate, Mahamane Ousmane.
Ousmane has dismissed the exercise as fraudulent after the electoral commission announced the ruling party’s candidate, Mohamed Bazoum, as winner.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also following the situation “very closely, his spokesman, Mr Stephan Dujarric, told newsmen in New York on Thursday.
“The Secretary-General calls on all candidates and their supporters to maintain the exemplary conduct that prevailed during the elections and to allow the electoral process to conclude in a peaceful manner.
“He urges all parties to resolve any election-related disputes through dialogue and the appropriate legal channels,” Dujarric said. (NAN)
