Unions Kicks Against Sack Of 145 TVC Workers

The sack of 145 workers of the Continental Broadcast Services Ltd (CBS) by the management has been described as national embarassment by the labour union.

It should be noted that CBS the owner of Television Continental (TVC) and Radio Continental, sack 145 workers in its employment.

Labour leaders who spoke to Elombah.com, condemned the mass lay-off.

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State, Mr Deji Elumoye, said the sack was unnecessary and embarrassing to the nation.

He said that the sack is uncalled for, especially considering the situation of the country at this period. Moreover media houses, including TVC, are under-staffed.

”In most media houses, journalists are overworked. One person covers two to three beats and now they have been sacked. It is unacceptable”, he said.

The , President, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Mr Bobboi Kaigama, also condemned the sack in its totality and said that the organised labour would look into it soon.

According to him, ”The leaders of the NLC and TUC are in Geneva for the International Labour Organisation conference. We will take action on it when we return”.

The General Secretary of Trade Union Congress(TUC), Mr Musa Lawal, said that the number of workers sacked was unacceptable because that number will increase the level of poverty already suffered by the people.

Continuing he said that it was not right for the private sector to sack that number of people at the same time.

He condemned the situation where expatriate workers who are paid in hard currencies, are retained and the indigenous workers are sacked.

He said that the organised labour leaders would look into the issue when they returned from the ILO conference.

In a statement from the CBS, Ms Regina Whenu, the Associate Consultant to CBS who signed the statement, said; ”this restructuring is geared toward repositioning the business for better and greater delivery of services to audiences and advertisers alike.

‘‘In line with these changes, we are reconfiguring our workforce as part of rationale to achieve our objective”.
