UPDATE: Court Orders Forfeiture Of Diezani’s $40m Jewellery, Gold iPhone


Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos State has ordered the forfeiture of 2,149 pieces of jewellery and a customised gold iPhone, valued at $40m, belonging to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The judge also ordered the anti-graft commission to publish in any national newspaper the interim order of forfeiture to serve as notice to the former Minister or anyone interested in the assets to be forfeited to appear before the court to show cause within 14 days why the assets should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

No fewer than 419 bangles, 315 rings, 304 earrings, 189 wristwatches were among the jewelries forfeited to Federal government.

The jewelries worth $40 million was seized from the former Minister of Petroleum by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The jewelries were recovered by the EFCC in the premises of the former petroleum minister.

In the application, the EFCC said the expensive items, comprising wristwatches, necklaces, bracelets, bangles, earrings and more, were reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities of the former minister.

Other jewelries seized were Expensive necklace and earnings , expensive bracelet 78, expensive brooch 77 ,expensive pendants 74, expensive necklace 48 , expensive necklace earnings and rings 32 expensive pendants and bracelets 18, expensive earnings and rings 15, expensive cuff-links 11, etc.

The court then adjourned further proceedings till August 13.
