UPDATE: INEC Declares Diri Bayelsa Governor-Elect

The Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] has bowed and declared the People’s Democratic Party [PDP] candidate of the Bayelsa State governorship election, Senator Douye Diri, the Bayelsa State governor-elect.

INEC declared Senator Diri and Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo as Governor-elect and Deputy Governor-elect of Bayelsa State, respectively.

In a statement, INEC confirmed receipt of Supreme Court ruling that recognised Diri as the governor but sacked David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress [APC].

ElombahNews earlier reported that INEC denied Senator Diri access into the premises when he came to collect his Certificate of Return.

It was gathered that Diri was stopped at the gate by security operatives and was later told to go and wait for response from the Commission.

However, in a latest turn of events,  INEC on Friday declared Diri the winner of the November 16 governorship election held in Bayelsa State.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the commission would give him the Certificate of Return in compliance with the order of the Supreme Court, which sacked David Lyon 24 hours to his inauguration.

The swearing in ceremony will take place in Yenegoa today, ElombahNews was reliably informed.
