Residents of FESTAC in Lagos State on Tuesday, witnessed what could best be described as mayhem as armed robbers numbering about 50 attacked two banks located in the suburb.

The two banks affected are Diamond and Access.

A source told Elombah.com that they left in their trail havoc leaving the residents psychologically devastated as a mother was killed with her 14 months child that she was clutching to her chest.

According to our source, the bullet pierced the wall of the building and shot through the mother and baby, killing both before help could come.

Another bizarre facet of the scenario was that the assailant raided the banks for two hours unchecked.

Elombah.com gathered that security operatives were nowhere to be seen, at least not until the operation major has been concluded by the dare-devil assailants.

When the police eventually showed up, they were easily subdued by the superior fire power of the heavily armed hoodlums.

The robbers after the eventful operations successfully fled the scene through the canal adjourning the FESTAC suburb.

While fleeing in a haste, the heavily cash-laden robbers dropped an excess luggage containing 27 million Naira which was recovered by the ‘mop-up’ security personnels who showed up later.

Also, several hundred rounds of live ammunitions were abandoned by the robbers.

An observer, who expressed shock at the incident, asked in disbelief, “Where was the police for two good hours while the robbery lasted?”

According to him, they went from one bank to the other, carting away loads of cash until there was none more left to steal and went their way with apparently little resistance.

“This reminds one of the abysmal state of insecurity in the nation; no one is safe. This is simply pathetic!

“Tomorrow you hear them preach for prompt payment of tax, levies, fees, and all what have you.

“You hear them talk of billions and billions in the pages of papers and televisions, yet one don’t feel the impact of those monies, nothing.

“Its like there was agreement between them and the police, which explains why the police showed up when they were almost done and through. This is absurd!” He concluded”

In the meantime, the Lagos State police has confirmed the incident and asserted that investigations have commenced to unravel those behind the heinous crime.
