US Congress Warns Nigeria over Detention of Journalists
The Congress of the United States has expressed “strong concern” about the detention and assault on journalists in Nigeria.
In a letter addressed to Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States of America (U.S.A), Justice Sylvanus Nsofor (rtd) the US Congress warned about the closing of media space in Nigeria.
The letter dated 25 November 2019 particularly mentioned troubling reports about Nigeria security services detaining journalists and activists like Omoyele Sowore, Jones Abiri, Kofi Bartels, Samuel Ogundipe, among others.
“The rights of all citizens must be respected without the threat of government reprisal”, Congress stated.
