Visa ban: Saraki hails US, asks UK, EU to follow suit
Says go beyond politicians, include electoral officers, security and judicial officials
The immediate past President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has lauded the government of the United States over the recent visa ban imposed upon some politicians for masterminding election rigging and violence during and after the 2019 general election.
ElombahNews had reported that the United States government imposed visa ban on some undisclosed persons over the roles they played in the November 2019 Kogi and Bayelsa State elections.
The ban also affected politicians for their roles in the developments leading to the Edo and Ondo States governorship elections coming up in September and October respecvtively.
Reacting to the ban, Senator Saraki, in a statement shared on his social media handle, asked the United Kingdom, and the European Union to follow suit.
The former Senator asked the foreign bodies to go beyond politicians and to include electoral officers, security officials and judicial personnel in the ban.
“I join millions of Nigerians to commend the United Kingdom and other international partners for responding swiftly to protect Nigeria’s democracy with visa restrictions and asset bans for electoral saboteurs.
“I appeal to the European Union to follow suit.
“This is necessary to send the right and strong signal that those who undermine democracy in Nigeria are enemies of the rest of the democratic world.
“The sanctions should go beyond politicians and include electoral officers, security officials and judicial officers who undermine our democracy by their actions during and after elections.”
