Following an email sent by Elombah.com regarding the acclaimed telephone chat between President Donald Trump and his Nigerian counterpart, President Muhammadu Buhari, the White House has published readout of telephone between the two presidents.
Elombah.com had, on Wednesday, sent an email to the Whitehouse demanding, amongst other things, to issue statement over the matter with a view to stating what actually transpired.
The email reads in part:
“We, for the sake of clarity, call on you, as well as the White House Spokesperson, and the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs of the new Donald Trump Administration to issue detailed written statements or address the media.
“We beckon on him/her to issue statement over the matter with a view to stating what actually transpired.
“Such clarifications must be explicit and clearly answer questions as:
“Did President Donald truly call “Nigerian leader”?
“If yes, who was the “Nigerian leader” called, Acting President Yemi Osibanjo or ailing President Buhari in his London hospital bed?
“What did President Trump tell the “Nigerian leader” that he purportedly called?
“Through which communication modes was the purported call made?
“Private mobile phone or domiciled call facilities in Nigeria’s seat of power in Abuja?
“Your prompt response will no doubt clear the air and eradicate speculations, especially taking cognisance of the fact that Nigerians are kept in the dark over the health status of their president.”
In response, the White House published the readout as follows:
“President Donald J. Trump spoke this week with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria to discuss the strong cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, including on shared security, economic, and governance priorities.
“President Trump underscored the importance the United States places on its relationship with Nigeria, and he expressed interest in working with President Buhari to expand the strong partnership.
“The leaders agreed to continue close coordination and cooperation in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and worldwide.
“President Trump expressed support for the sale of aircraft from the United States to support Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.
“President Trump thanked President Buhari for the leadership he has exercised in the region and emphasized the importance of a strong, secure, and prosperous Nigeria that continues to lead in the region and in international forums.”
